Elgato Low Profile Mic Arm - Review Redux

The Elgato Low Profile boom arm has undergone some major improvements since its original release several years ago, so I decided to order a new one and re-review it to see how it performs. It's a key feature of the arm, so the...

I hear that if you use this setup often enough, you get biceps like Peter Lindgren. You're going to have to buy some new T-shirts ;-)
Shure SM7Buck
I never shoulda sold mine /:
I handhold my SM7b for all my studio vocals and LOVE using it that way (much more like being on stage, so the energy is better). I also use it for some reels/tiktoks that I shoot out and about town but this would make it next level! Great vid!!
Don't use that sm7b out in the field, its too expensive to break. The md46 and the 58 can take a beating. the 7b can't! Even if it is the spectacular Bojo
Even at the show this setup reminded me of a chunky cordless drill. On the good brands the battery and gearbox kind of balance each other and give you quite good balance and handling despite the weight. On that vein a 3d printed small cage around the transmitter to create a foot, perhaps modelled on a makita battery, might give you a base/stand for putting the microphone down.
Yeah, I think the foot idea is brilliant!
My fifine arm came with an allen key. No issues and very happy with it.
My FET Head also has trouble securely fitting with everything I’ve tried. Maybe a design flaw?
Really? I've had no issues with patch cables and regular XLR cables, but the transmitter was definitely a no-go.
Loved the sound quality of the audio-technica mic.
It's so underrated!
Spectacular Bojo🥰
From Wikipedia: From the Esperanto (a constructed language) Noun bojo (accusative singular bojon, plural bojoj, accusative plural bojojn) bark, barking
I love this. Maybe I can print many bojon
You going to Infocomm by chance?
I actually have no idea what it is. I need more info on Infocomm 😁
That's a fun idea, but I'm wondering, doesn't the transmitter have adjustable gain? I know the beltpacks have enough gain to not need an extra booster.
They do, but with the SM7B specifically, there's just SO MUCH gain required that maxing out most transmitters either doesn't hit the mark, or isn't super clean. Plus in this case, the booster becomes part of the handle, so it works out.
Tom, would this transmitter work with the Blue Sona? I'm interested in the wireless capabilities, but didn't know if because the way the Blue Sona is designed, if the transmitter would fit. Thanks in advance!
With the Sona's XLR placement, the transmitter won't directly connect. So what you could do is use a small XLR patch cable and then find a way to attach the transmitter to the side of the mic or its yoke. That actually sounds kind of fun...
Genius setup tbh
It's silly how much I love it.
Overkill but I need this set up 😂
Yes! Overkill is the best.
I am looking for a cheaper solution on the wireless XLR option as I would be curious what this would look like on an MV7. Shouldn't need a Cloudlifter type device.
Someone might have a better solution, but as far as I know, wireless XLR is a bit pricey because it's typically part of a UHF system. This ends up being better in the long run because those systems tend to last forever, but the upfront cost is higher. I think there might be cheaper XLR transmitters, but you might run into issues with reliability/complexity. In this case, as goofy as this idea is, I wanted it to be rock solid reliable.
Has anyone told you that your thumbnails are freaking awesome? If not that’s a shame, bc they are seriously well done
Thank you! I really appreciate that. I'm particularly proud of how this one came out, so it means a lot.
This makes me want a 3d printer really bad! 🤣 I love it! That little switch from the booster holding the spectacular bojo in place is fantastic!
Let's pretend I designed it that way on purpose and that it wasn't a happy accident 😉
I told my oldest son that I wanted him to name his first born "Spectacular Bojo." He looked at me like I was Tom Buck!
I'm assuming that means a look of admiration and pride? 😉
@@tombuck indeed! 💜
This video is clutch. I have google voice for my company phone number but I didn't want to use that as my listener voicemail number. So I'm glad to hear of SpeakPipe for the first time.

BOOM!!! Having FUN is what it's ALL about!!! Fantastic video, Tom!!!
Tom your content and style is what makes YT great! Thanks for making content fun, entertaining and insightful.
Great showcase! You could also add a 3D printed cover to the back of the SM7B to protect it and add a channel logo to it. Would give it a nice reporter vibe!
Any downside to using a dji 1 as a wireless transmitter?
Off the top of my head, I don’t know that it has enough gain?
Spectacular Bojo, in javanese is Spectacular Wife. So yeah, its a great name tom 😂
Haha, I also have one of those!
Been waiting for this! 👀👀👀🤯🤯🤯
One thing I can’t wrap my head around is how creators do this with typically-mounted mics (the Yeti comes to mind) and I can’t hear ANY handling noise or resonance no matter how much they jostle. Whereas if I try it it’s an absolute cacophony of vibrations and handling noise. Is it just me? Are folks just running noise filters in post?
great review
Hearing all the birth years made me sad. *cries in 1981*
My initial impulse was to make a joke about "here's a chair grandpa, why don't you rest?" 😅 But 4 years really isn't that much of a difference...
i havent noticed you setting it down on the base, is the bottom of the xlr transmitter not flush? It looks like it would almost create a nice stand too if you could set it down on its "butt"
The balance is a little off, so it’s tough to stand up. But…you just made me think that a little dock/stand thing could be cool 🤔
@@tombuck I was going to suggest it hehehe...I am putting a rig together like yours and will let you know if I come up with something! i had been anxiously awaiting this vid!
I was waiting for this video!
Oh my God! Now we never gonna get a video with the blue sona or sm7db that doesn't need a booster Sigh...wuda really liked to see that one
Bought the original one today. Much preferred the minimal branding and it's been around for so long 😃
Was waiting to see more about this 😂
It’s my new favorite haha
"It is absolutely okay to have fun with this stuff". I love this and appreciate that sentiment. Great video! Thanks for sharing the file too!
I have noticed the trend of creators handholding their SM7B in their content. I will accept that more than I accept creators handholding their lav/wireless go style mics in content. That drives me a little crazy. LOL Great video, Tom!
Omg I loathe people holding their lavs with their two little fingers
@@itsthehumor95 I dislike that it has been a trend. 🤦🏻♂️
I wonder if the SM7dB would work well in this situation? Also, you *do* realize that pretty soon you'll be able to lobby the Pantone folks for a specific color called "Buck Blue". ;)
I would be ok with that 😅
Is there a cheaper option other than the senheisser Ew Dp? I really want to do this but that one piece is pricy!
XLR transmitters tend to be pricey since they’re UHF systems, but they last forever.
@@tombuck is there any way this would work with a dji or rode wireless set up or an I delusional LOL?
This will anger the purists 😂
This is talking in a life of its own lol😂😊❤
This is going to sell so many SM7Dbs and wireless systems. I can’t wait to see the ridiculousness spread.
So cool :) I dont have all that's needed though to create it :) like a 3d printer LOL
This is amazing, Tom. How frustrated are you that you are using a booster to get ~25db of gain, then reducing the gain by 20db? It’s so close to not needing any of that. Did you test without the booster (I also always use a booster with my sm7b)? Just curious.
Since it ends up with a clean signal, I don’t really mind at all. It is kind of funny though 😅
You could just use an xlr to 3.5mm into a rode wireless pro or Dji mic 2. Use the camera audio as scratch and sync up the boosted recorded 32bit file.
Yeah but I prefer UHF for many reasons.
Squeezing a dad joke into a dad joke...love it.
Hello, Tom! When a review for mv7+, pleeeease⁉️
🤣what a fun idea! next experiment should be a sm7b lapel mic.
Like a Flava Flav necklace 😁
@@tombuck yeeaaaahhhh boyyyyyyy
